Hit the beach at Barceloneta and take a quick dip in minus 8 degrees. Yes, IceBarcelona, an ice bar, will give you shelter from the heat of a summer day, with mittens and a winter coat exchanged for your sarong, while you sip cocktails and enjoy sculptures made of ice. The furry arctic-style jackets you get to wear are worth the €15 price of admission (not that you can take them home, but then you wouldn’t want to once you get outside again!), along with one drink.
The bar changes design every now and then, and it was once done in the style of Gaudi’s Parc Guell except made entirely out of ice. The lighting design is also amazing, turning the atmosphere into a trippy wonderful experience, while the outdoor terrace is a gorgeous spot for gazing at the Mediterranean while you knock back a few cocktails. Don’t ask for anything with soda, as the bottles apparently explode when they freeze, but you can try an extra-cold beer and a range of cocktails suitable for the icy conditions.
Located between the clubs Sotavento and Shoko on Barceloneta beach, go down the stairs of the Casino del Barcelona or Carrer de la Marina to reach IceBarcelona. If the ice isn’t your thing, try Be Cool club for minimal hypnotic electronic beats or live concerts in the north part of Barcelona at Plaça Joan Llongueras, 5. Check out their monthly ‘Look Back Night’ for retro sounds from Italo-disco to old-school techno. Whenever you go to Barcelona, you can find yourself somewhere cool.
