From the iconic street art adorning the East Side Gallery to the world-class art collections housed on the UNESCO World Heritage listed Museum Island, Berlin has always been known for its pioneering art scene, hosting a number of annual art events and festivals.
Launched in 2012, Berlin Art Week is the latest addition – a weeklong celebration of contemporary art, offering a unique platform for the city’s many artists and galleries. Subsuming two of the city’s annual art fairs – the Art Berlin Contemporary and the Preview Berlin Art Fair – Berlin Art Week collaborates with hundreds of galleries and art institutes to put a series of special art events around the city. In its inaugural year, the gallery openings, art fairs, exhibition premieres and special displays drew huge crowds of local and international artists, collectors and curators from around the globe and this year’s event is set to be even bigger.
The 2013 Berlin Art Week runs from 17th – 22nd September, with the Art Berlin Contemporary (ABC) Fair held from 19th to 22nd at Gleisdreieck Station. The KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Nationalgalerie and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt are amongst the many galleries getting involved, hosting a number of temporary exhibitions and unveiling new works throughout the week.
