Make friends with a kangaroo at the Australia Zoo in Brisbane

Here are our picks for Brisbane‘s best attractions for families and kids:

Australia Zoo
Don’t miss a day out at Australia Zoo. Started by Terri and Steve Irwin (the Crocodile Hunter), Australia Zoo is passionate about animals and conservation.

Dreamworld is one of the biggest theme parks on the Gold Coast. You can explore no less than 13 worlds here including Tiger Island, Nick Central, The Australian Wildlife Experience, Wiggles World, V8 Supercars and the Big 6 Thrill Rides.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
The world’s first and largest koala sanctuary is home to over 130 of these cuddly little critters as well as other indigenous wildlife (including the elusive platypus!)

Queensland Sciencentre
Brisbane’s Sciencentre is currently hosting the Megawatt exhibition (until Feb 2012). Kids can learn all about electricity through over 40 hands on displays. They’ll also love exploring the museum’s regular exhibits: Body Zone, Earth Space and Action Stations.

Sea World
Another large theme park on the Gold Coast, Sea World is packed full of rides, shows and marine animals including King penguins, polar bears, dolphins and sharks. It is possible to purchase a VIP pass to visit Sea World and a few other Gold Coast theme parks including Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet’n’Wild World.

South Bank
South Bank is a hive of activity on the weekends as locals and tourists alike take advantage of the cafes, markets, parklands and shopping. It’s walking distance to the city’s best museums, the arts center and art gallery and is a great place for a family stroll.
