Cairns Lagoon on the Esplanade in central Cairns is a real drawcard for kids. This huge man-made pool is a safe saltwater swimming spot for kids (and their parents!) all year round.
Muddy’s playground is another kid’s paradise in the heart of the city. Divided into three sections with activities and equipment appropriate for specific age groups, Muddy’s is popular with families and children aged 10 and under. Its large café, shady trees and water park features are particularly sought after!
Cairns Skate Park
Older kids will love this huge skate park on the Esplanade. The biggest skatepark in Australia, the park features clover bowls, cradles, tombstones and all of the best challenges any young skater dreams of.
Kuranda Scenic Railway
Enjoy a scenic train ride from Cairns to a world heritage rainforest. Visit Kuranda Village for lunch and a spot of shopping then take the kids to experience wildlife up close at one of the nearby animal parks. Take your pick from Birdworld, the Butterfly Sanctuary, the Koala Gardens or the Venom Zoo. Enjoy a thrilling ride back to Cairns through the treetops on the Kuranda Skyrail!
Great Barrier Reef
There are a number of Great Barrier Reef tours that are especially geared towards families and children. Take your pick from visiting an island, an activity pontoon, a private yacht or directly entering the water from the back of a boat. Activity pontoons are a particularly popular way to experience the Reef. Featuring safety rails, submerged platforms, fish feeding sessions, underwater observatories and glass bottom boats, they are a fantastic opportunity for children to get up close to the Reef’s rich marine life.
