While Cairns is most famous – and rightly so! – for its location to beautiful Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, there are myriad other tourist options for the adventurous and curious traveler. Just outside of Cairns is the beautiful small town of Kuranda, which borders the Barron Gorge National Park. A day trip to Kuranda is an increasingly popular tour option for those traveling to Far North Queensland in Australia
You can get to Kuranda by car, or by the Kuranda Scenic Railway which is a scenic, leisurely one and a half hour tour through this amazing part of the world. There is also the option for you to combine the Kuranda Scenic Railway with the Daintree Rainforest skyrail, where you can hope off and have a look at the tree-top rainforest station. Along the way to Kuranda you have the opportunity to stop off at the Tjapukai village where you can learn about traditional Aborigine culture.
Kuranda sights include Birdworld – a spectacularly huge aviary where you can spot tropical indigenous Australian birds and observe them in a natural habitat. There is also a combined pass to Birdworld and the nearby Butterfly Sanctuary and Kuranda Koala Gardens. Australia is a country famous for it’s beauty and it’s bigness! And the Butterfly Sanctuary is no different. Be immersed in beautiful, enormous butterflies. Make sure to wear bright coloured clothing on your visit here to have these beautiful creatures land right on you!
No visit to Australia is complete without holding a koala, and the Kuranda Koala Gardens is the perfect Australian wildlife experience for all ages. See kangaroos, crocodiles, snakes, lizards, emus and of course koalas!
