At New Year’s, Cairns is hot—literally. The average high temperatures in December reach around 88 degrees Fahrenheit in the tropical north of Queensland. Whether you’re a local, a backpacker, or a baby boomer, Cairns screams for a visit during the holiday season, and it also puts up a good party or two for New Year’s and even Christmas. So, if you’re a traveler looking to bask in nothing but warm sunshine and tropical surrounds this holiday season, keep in mind the following events for ringing in the New Year’s Eve in Cairns.

New Year’s Eve Family Concert & Fireworks

Sure, nothing is going to be quite as impressive as the big fireworks extravaganza that has made Sydney’s New Year’s famous, but Cairns doesn’t shy away from a good show. Join others at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon for a night of family-friendly entertainment culminating with a fireworks display when the ball drops. Party-goers are encouraged to bring some sparklers, snacks, and picnic blankets to the festivities.

Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party

The lovely Fitzroy Island lies about 45 minutes away from Cairns via ferry, and, given its seclusion from the mainland, it offers the perfect location for a New Year’s party. The Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party is a ticket-only event and involves live music and DJs, ferry transfer, games, prizes and a light meal. Even better is the free entry to several Cairns clubs when the night on the island ends.

As with New Year’s anywhere, it is important to keep in mind that many establishments and Cairns tours will be closed on New Year’s Day, and with the influx of travelers passing through the area, the importance of planning and booking ahead cannot be stressed.

Enjoy ringing in the New Year in Cairns!
