Cairns is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef,” and it most certainly is. Most travel enthusiasts know something about the beautiful beaches, terrific diving opportunities and resorts. It’s also a great base for day trips and extended excursions into the surrounding rivers, streams and gorges that abound in the region.
One of the most exciting ways to explore the interior is via white water rafting tours, but if it’s a romantic adventure you’re seeking, you can’t miss with a ride in a hot air balloon. For a bird’s-eye view of the beautiful far north of Queensland, one of the many tour packages featuring flights above the majestic Atherton Tablelands often prove to be the highlight of any couple’s trip. Most tours include transportation to and from your hotel and last roughly half a day from start to finish.
You might have romance on the brain, but keep in mind that no visit to Cairns is complete without some exposure to the regional flora and fauna. Numerous private tour operators offer exposure to the many natural wonders in the area and it’s well worth taking advantage of their expertise. Highlights include the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, boating excursions on the Daintree River, swimming in the Mossman Gorge, and trips to Cape Tribulation, where one of the oldest rainforests in world meets the Great Barrier Reef. Also noteworthy are the Cairns Tropical Zoo (the largest facility of its kind in North Queensland), and the Cairns Wildlife Dome (get your koala shows and kookaburra fix)!
