Puerto Plata is a popular tourist destination and cruise port located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. One of the country’s top resort destinations, Puerto Plata is famous for its beaches, watersports and deep-sea sport-fishing (as fishing boats can be chartered from the port at Puerto Plata). If you only have one day in Puerto Plata, you can visit the city’s historic downtown area, enjoy the beaches or join a tour or shore excursion to explore more of the Dominican Republic.
Start your visit to downtown Puerto Plata with a stroll along the malecón (seaside promenade) followed by visits to the local markets and the historic Fort San Felipe. Tour a rum distillery and learn how cigars are made during a cigar factory tour. One of the highlights of a visit to Puerto Plata’s downtown area is a ride in the teleférico (cable car) that climbs to the top of Mount Isabel and offers spectacular panoramic views of the city, surrounding area and the Caribbean. Afterwards, sample the local island cuisine and hang around into the evening hours to dance the meringue at a local nightspot.
Animal lovers can swim with dolphins at Cofresi Beach, home to the Ocean World Adventure Park, and golf enthusiasts can check out the famous Robert Trent Jones golf course at Playa Dorada. Snorkeling is another popular activity for visitors to Puerto Plata and there are several good snorkeling spots located along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. Windsurfers and kiteboarders should head further east to Cabarete Beach, the site of the annual World Kiteboarding Championships; and nature lovers will enjoy a visit to El Morro National Park on an ecological tour visiting natural areas along the coast, or a trip inland to explore the countryside on an outback safari ATV tour.
