Second Rare White Kiwi Born at Pukaha

The world’s first white kiwi was born at the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre last May and, just before Christmas, she was joined by a sibling! Kiwis are nearly always brown in color, so the arrival of a pure white chick in May and another in December is an extremely rare occurrence.

Endemic to New Zealand, kiwis are flightless birds that have roamed the country for 70 million years. About the size of a chicken and looking rather like a small mammal, kiwis’ long beaks are the only beaks in the world to have nostrils at the end to help it sniff out its food in the undergrowth.
