When venturing to a new destination, it’s always a good idea to come prepared with a dependable and accurate map. This is definitely true when planning how to get around in Dubai, where the lay of the land can be somewhat confusing for the uninitiated. The website for the Dubai Geographic Information Systems Center has a number of good maps that can be downloaded.

Dubai’s public transport system is probably the best in the Middle East, and multi-day passes are available. Small ferries called (abra) service Dubai Creek, and stations are accessible on both the Bur Dubai and Deira sides of the creek.

Perhaps the most unforgettable way to explore the area is on offer via one of the many hot air balloon cruises that are advertised. You’ll want to get into the city early or even the night before as the best options typically depart at dawn.

Dubai is divided into numerous districts, including Downtown, Dubai Marina, Satwa (home to the city’s Little India and Little Manilla areas), and Dubai’s old financial center, Deira. In all of the above, the city’s fleet of taxis is a safe and affordable way to get around.

Located roughly 25 minutes by car from the center of Dubai City, Jumeirah Beach is a great place to stretch your legs and do a little shopping. That can be done by either by calling or text messaging for a taxi or you can take the Dubai metro red line to Jumeirah.

As Dubai is not a very cheap place to navigate, the metro is a great way to get around without going broke. Covering more than 40 miles, 70 kilometers, the metro gets you from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali with prices ranging from between $0.50 to $3.15 depending on what zones you cross. Two new lines are in the works that would carry you all the way to the airport.
