Cities and their streets are as much victims of fashion and the changing of government policy as the rest of us. Take O’Connell Street in Dublin for example. Once an expensive stretch of Georgian town houses, occupied by the wealthy, with wide boulevard pavements, it has become a strip of fast food outlets, gaming arcades and chain stores with a recent bad reputation as somewhere to avoid. The council are trying to rehabilitate the street and its image by designating it an Architectural Conservation Area and installing the world’s tallest public sculpture, the Spire of Dublin.
