With everything from medieval castles to world-class museums at your disposal, Edinburgh is an easy place to keep even the most hyperactive kids amused. Many of the city’s tourist attractions are children friendly and discounted family tickets are often available, so look around for deals. Edinburgh Castle and Craigmillar castle are full of quirky lookouts and hideaways ripe for exploring, while the Edinburgh Dungeons will leave children gasping at the gruesome horrors of 17th-century Scotland. Even a trip on the open-top Sightseeing bus can be an entertaining way to get around – just try to avoid a rainy day.
One of the city’s most popular kids attractions is the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, a fascinating exhibition of illusions and entertaining interactive displays. Shrink like Alice in Wonderland, wander a vortex tunnel and swim in a virtual fish tank or x-ray your hands – all in the name of fun. Edinburgh zoo, with over 1,000 resident animals including everything from menacing lions to fluffy pandas, is always a hit with the younger generation, but make sure you time your visit to catch the daily penguin parade. Alternatively, head to Deep Sea World where you can descend the underwater tunnel to ogle the sea life or even cage-dive with sharks. Active types can expel extra energy at the Alien rock indoor climbing center or the Time Twisters Indoor Adventure Centre, or else pack a picnic and explore the city’s green spaces. Feed squirrels at the botanical gardens, watch the world go by at the West Princes Street Gardens, climb the peak of the Scott Monument for an impressive panorama over the city or try your hand at archery in the Beecraigs Country Park, just outside of the city.
