If you want to surf in Fiji, go to the Mamanucas. If you want to eat a traditional lovo meal, spend a day in a Fijian village. If you’re idea of perfect Fijian holiday is to lounge poolside with a tropical drink, play golf, and stay in the finest of accommodations, then look no further than Denarau.
Of all the things to do on Denarau the majority are comprised of the usual resort activities. Since the island is only 20 minutes from Nadi (and connected by a thin causeway) it’s a convenient place for Fiji travelers who are short on time or simply don’t want to travel too far beyond Nadi. Big name resorts such as the Sheraton, Westin, and Radisson dominate the tropical shoreline, and since the beaches aren’t the nicest for swimming (much of Denarau Island is actually reclaimed swamp land) most guests opt to cool off in the lavish, resort-quality swimming pools.
Aside from lounging poolside, one of the other popular things to do on Denarau is to head down to the Denarau Marina and hop on a boat charter for the day out to the Mamanuca or Yasawa island groups. The beaches in the outer island groups are much nicer than the ones back on Viti Levu, and the convenience of being able to depart from right outside of your resort make Denarau a logistically sound option for embarking on day cruises. You can also spend the day discovering Viti Levu on land, and whether it’s trekking through the jungles, visiting a traditional village, or just perusing the markets of Nadi, you can spend the day exploring the rest of the island and then return back to your luxurious home base on Denarau.
Lastly, one thing that makes Denarau different from other global resort hubs (such as Ka’anapali, Maui), is that the resort area is largely integrated to the point where facilities and activities such as tennis courts and scuba diving are all shared collectively between resorts. The 18-hole golf course sits right in the center of all of the hotels, and when you combine the various dining options of all the resorts it feels as if you’re staying not just in one specific hotel, but that you are a guest of the entire Denarau resort.
