Perhaps the world’s most extravagant declaration of love, the Taj Mahal is unquestionably one of the most iconic landmarks on earth, and for good reason. The behemoth white marble mausoleum, built in 1648 by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, took more than 20,000 workers 17 years to complete. Every surface of the iridescent marble is covered in delicate calligraphy inlaid with black marble and intricately carved flowers bejeweled with lapis lazuli, carnelian, coral, turquoise and jasper.

Known as the “Venice of the East” and the “Kashmir of Rajasthan,” Udaipur beats all when it comes to fairytale palaces and opportunities for lakeside repose. Not for the lean of means, this city is deservedly considered one of the most beautiful and easily the most romantic cities in the subcontinent. That said, if you’re after budget travel and cheap accommodations, you may want to consider looking elsewhere.
