Nazareth, located in the lower Galilee about two hours from Tel Aviv, is best known as the childhood home of Jesus Christ and is surrounded by some of Christianity’s most significant sites.

Although it would take years to take in all of Israel’s historical, cultural and gustatory pleasures, you can manage a number of the highlights if you have only a week. This suggested itinerary will help you make the most of your seven days.

Most of Israel’s most popular attractions are within a few hours’ drive of Tel Aviv. Here are a few of the best options for day trips out of the big city.

There are more than forty national parks in Israel, ranging from archaeological sites such as Masada to sites of natural beauty such as Carmel National Park. As of 2005, Israel maintains more than 150 nature reserves, protecting 2,500 species of indigenous wild plants, 20 species of fish, 400 species of birds and 70 species of mammals. Some parks are located at archaeological sites such as Tel Megiddo, Beit Shean and Kursi, while others, such as the Alexander stream and Hurshat Tal, focus on nature and the preservation of local flora and fauna.

The coastal community of Eilat is located at the southern tip of Israel, and consists mainly of a four-mile strip of beach along the Red Sea. To say that the town is a resort community would be an understatement. Partying, water sports, desert activities, and other recreational activities attract large numbers of tourists annually, meaning that the local population is vastly outnumbered by tourists most times of the year. It’s a great place to cut loose and soak up some sun, but it isn’t a great choice for culturally inclined travelers (the exception to this being the recently opened biblical theme park, Kings City).

Founded well before the establishment of the State of Israel (nearly 40 years prior, in fact), Tel Aviv is easily one of the most populous and influential cities in the country. It is also a terrific place to visit as it is home to dazzling viewpoints, a vibrant beach scene, jumping nightlife, flea markets and shopping centers, and a collection of noteworthy museums and cultural destinations.
