Jenny and I had been in Las Vegas for 3 days already, and had done the whole tourist thing. We had wandered the strip for days, visited the casinos, the restaurants, the hotels. We were exhausted, and felt like we had the entire Vegas experience. There was one thing left for us to do, and it was our Grand Canyon Day Trip.

Like Yosemite and Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon can get a little crowded. I’m not saying it should be closed off or anything, but there are times when you want to just appreciate the sheer magnitude and beauty of the rock and sky without having your reverie interrupted by somebody’s loud kids or a bickering couple or that smug, purple roadrunner blasting through your campsite. At least the coyote is quiet.

I have this friend. He’s kind of a naysayer, and when it comes to Las Vegas, he refuses to have anything to do with it short of a layover at the airport. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t like gambling and has absolutely no interest in casinos, and since he’s never been beyond the terminals at McCarran International Airport, he’s unfairly written off the whole city and Las Vegas Tourism in general. I thought this was ridiculous.
