Melbourne Things to Do

There’s no denying it – Melbourne is a car-loving city. A past penchant for bungalows and outer suburban living means the city’s fringes sprawl for miles. Most visitors base themselves in the inner city, however, where getting around is fairly straightforward – as long as you can master the ticketing system!

Having lived in Melbourne for most of my adult life, I didn’t think that a tour of the city’s laneways and arcades could teach me anything new. I mean, a tour is for tourists, right? Well almost immediately I realized there was a lot about my city that I didn’t know.

Melbourne’s arcades and laneways speak as much of the city’s past as they do of its future. From original Victorian arcades and specialty shops to fashion boutiques showcasing upcoming local designers, Melbourne’s most unique shopping experiences are not on the main drag.
