Tennis fans can look forward to the Australian Open this summer

Melbournians love to party and thousands flock to the city every year to join in the fun. In mid-summer tennis fans descend on the city for the Australian Open. Fall, between March and May, is the busiest season for festivals with foodies, car racing nuts and gardeners well catered for. As the cooler weather breezes in, winter festivals encourage writers and film buffs to come out of the cold. Spring begins in earnest at the Spring Racing Carnival, where one sporting event (the Melbourne Cup) grabs the attention of the entire nation.

Spring Racing Carnival – 28 Sep – 20 Nov
The Melbourne Cup is an historic horse race held on the first Tuesday in November. Its significance is such that the entire state takes a day off work!

Melbourne Festival – 6-22 Oct
This arts festival has a packed program of innovative dance, theatre, music, visual arts and multimedia events from Australian and International artists.

Australian Open – The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific -16-29 Jan
The world’s best tennis players sweat it out to see who reigns supreme.

Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – 2-21 Mar
This 20-day festival attracts foodies the world over!

2012 FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix – 15-18 Mar
The Australian Grand Prix is a highlight of Melbourne’s event calendar for every boy and girl racer.

Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show – 28 Mar – 1 Apr
Another crowd-pleaser. This show is held at the World Heritage Listed Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens.

Melbourne Writers Festival – 26 Aug – 4 Sep
A must for emerging and published writers and anyone with a love of words.

Melbourne Film Festival – 21 Jul – 7 Aug
