As with India’s other major metropolises, Mumbai is often swarming with traffic and moving around can be a lengthy if not a tedious process. The good news is that there are several modes of transportation that will get you where you need to go. Locals in Mumbai heavily depend on public transportation since convenient parking spaces are far and few, so getting around might be a little less scenic and a little more crowded than desired.
One of the better answers to how to get around Mumbai is by black and yellow top taxi, which usually comes at fairly reasonable prices. It costs just under $20 to get from one end of the city to the other and these taxis can be hailed easily from the street. These compact automobiles are perhaps not as accommodating as one would like, only able to fit one bag in the trunk, but there are often roof-top carriers that can do the trick. Just take extra precaution to make sure everything is secured and safe before riding off.
It is also noted that these taxis are commonly a bit shaky and lacking in air conditioning, so if you are looking for a bit more comfort and are willing to pay for it, you can hire a private taxi from one of many cab services that come complete with very competent and able drivers. Prices here can vary a little, but are traditionally no more than 30% over what you would be paying for common taxis.
In either instance, remember that not every driver is going to be as honest as others. Do yourself a favor and closely monitor the meters to make sure they have not been tampered with. Also, night rates are commonly a little more expensive than during the day, so take care to make sure your driver is not charging you night rates during the day. You can usually tell this by reading the heading before entering the cab. If it is in black, you are getting day rates and if it is in red, it is the night rate.
