It’s difficult to get a reservation in some of the Big Apple‘s best restaurants, even harder still to ‘wing it’ and try and find a place that’s both affordable, open, and without the huge line outside. When you’re tired of walking and just want to sit down on the curb and eat some homemade grub, the solution to all your problems just might manifest in the form of an NYC food truck.
Serving up almost every type of cuisine you can think of, New York City’s food trucks are popular, affordable, and (depending on the neighborhood) pretty trendy. If you have twitter on your phone, the best way to find them is to check the food trucks’ twitter accounts; they usually have the most updated location information.
For a snack: Wafels & Dinges. This is so much more than your average Belgian waffle—for example, adding pulled pork, bacon, or chilli and cilantro is certainly not something you’d see every day in Belgium. Fruits and nuts can also be added. Sometimes there are daily challenges for earning free ‘dinges’ on your waffle, such as ordering like a redneck! (@waffletruck.) Milk Truck has unbeatable grilled cheese sandwiches with ingredients like Gruyere, bacon, caramelized onions, and rye bread (@milktrucknyc).
For mains: Korilla BBQ. You might not expect to order tacos and burritos at a food truck called Korilla BBQ, but you won’t regret it. If you can’t decide between Ribeye of the Tiger, Tofuture Body Love, or Wonderbird, you can order an I’m Feeling Lucky and see what kind of sauce mix you end up with. They have been known to frequent Dumbo, Midtown and SoHo, but they also move around a lot (@KorillaBBQ). Also try Luke’s Lobster (@LukesLobster).
For dessert: Big Gay Ice Cream. Often at 1st Avenue and Avenue A. Try the Gobbler, Cococone, or Salty Pimp. Toppings include elderflower syrup, key lime curd, pumpkin butter, Trix cereal, and wasabi pea dust. It also has daily shake specials.(@biggayicecream).
For a drink: Kelvin Natural has ‘slush’ beverages with fruit and herbs. It has repeatedly earned a spot on numerous ‘best food truck’ lists and is highly praised among New Yorkers, especially the thirsty ones. It moves around often (@kelvinslush).
All-around yummy: The (vegan and organic) Cinnamon Snail has breakfast, pastries and sandwiches that are legendary for curbside eats. They’re a tad more expensive when compared to your average food truck, but it’s worth the price (@veganlunchtruck).
