Embraced lovingly by emerald mountains and azure seas, Rio de Janeiro offers the perfect setting for precious romance. True, unadulterated sex in the sultry city is easy to come by, but don’t underestimate the power of the Marvelous City to seduce in more subtle ways.

It’s no secret that the lofty heights of Corcovado offer prime smooching opportunities for couples overcome by the view. Consider, however, that you heathens are still standing at the foot of a statue of Christ the Redeemer. The cable car ride up to Sugar Loaf Mountain is another unique option for high-altitude romance, and the sunsets from both vantage points are, in a word, unbeatable.

If long walks with your special someone are more your speed, take a bohemian Rio Santa Teresa tour and stroll along cobblestone streets with panoramic vistas of the city below, interspersed with al fresco dining and hushed conversation. Or, descend to the Lagoa area and get a little shade amongst the native flora at the lush Botanical Garden and hauntingly beautiful Parque Lage—a rundown neoclassical mansion-turned-art school right out of Great Expectations—just next door.

For a bit of mutual splashing, surprisingly quiet Arpoador, where Ipanema and Copacabana beaches meet, is one of the city’s most intimate spots. Historic Copacabana Fort rules both beaches from atop a rocky promontory, with great weekend brunches in the on-site cafe and, along with neighboring Parque Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema Park), great sunset views. Water-lovers can also see a different side of the city with a Guanabara Bay cruise.

And last but certainly not least, no place says quintessential Rio romance like the Copacabana Palace. This sparkling jewel of a hotel, as glamorous as ever, offers customized beach-side service if the spectacular swimming pool just won’t do, and sumptuous suites bound to elicit an affirmative response to any “Will you marry me?” asked within.
