Rome is beautiful – and knows it. It basks in its glorious history, just inviting you to take its photograph. One of the most splendid aspects are the rooftops – all those spires and domes and jumbled, eccentric angles of apartment buildings – but how do you get up there to take your shot? Is it even possible to get up there? Well, it might cost you a bit in food or wine, but it will be worth it. And nothing will beat watching the sunset over the roof of Rome. Here are a few terrace bars and restaurants with the best views in Rome.

1. American Bar at the Hotel Forum

Wonderful views of the Imperial Forums and Monument of Victor Emanuel while you sip a coffee, cocktail, wine or beer. Open to the general public every day from 5pm from March to October. Via Tor Del Conti, 31.

2. La Terrazza Paradiso at Hotel Atlante Star

This small four star hotel is close to St Peter’s and has an unobstructed view of the Tiber River, Castel Sant’Angelo and the Vatican. La Terrazza has a separate entrance so there’s no need to enter the hotel. There is also a formal restaurant called Les Etoiles. Via Giovanni Vitelleschi, 42.

3. Boscolo Exedra Rome

This is a luxury hotel with a Terrace Posh Bar & Restaurant with views over the Piazza della Repubblica and one extra feature: a rooftop swimming pool. Non-guests can pay to swim. Piazza della Repubblica, 47.

4. Hotel Splendide Rome

This is a very superior five star hotel with views to match over the Borghese Gardens, Villa Medici, Trinita del Monti and all the way to Saint Peter’s. Enjoy food at one of the expensive restaurants, or you can just have an expensive drink in the bar area. Via di Porta Pinciana 14.

5. Rooftop Garden Restaurant Circus, Fortyseven Hotel

This is a more contemporary hotel with an emphasis on modern artists. The food served in the restaurant is all locally sourced and the views are sublime. Via Luigi Petroselli, 47.
