The Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular tourist destination in San Francisco and well it should be. The sea lions lazing about the pier, the sunset, the view of the bay, and of course the food: there’s a lot to love. Many head down to grab a bowl of chowder or get their weekly seafood fix, but every once and a while, there’s something that makes a good place even better.
Chalk this event up, then, to being a solid good time: McCormick & Kuleto’s (on the corner of Beach and Larkin) has announced that their 18th annual Shuck & Swallow Oyster Competition, with an oyster and wine pairing benefit event, will be held this Sept 27th. Think it’s easy to shuck an oyster? Think again. There’s a definite knack to pry the little guys open, and a seasoned shucker can haul with incredible speed. Teams will compete to see how many they can shuck and swallow in ten minutes. Viewing is free, but a $30 optional oyster and wine pairing will benefit the Marine Mammal Center and will be held on site from 6-8pm.
So whether or not you’re interested in shucking with the big boys, or enjoying an incredible meal, or simply watching the hubbub and lazing with the barking sea-lions, it’s bound to be a good reason to head down to the harbor.
