With more than 30,000 islands, part of the Stockholm Archipelago, island hopping is easy. Accessible via ferry from Stockholm, the Archipelago offers a vast array of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors from simply enjoying the water, to boating, biking, hiking and more. The islands have inspired poets, writers and even scientists (four chemical elements were discovered here).
Not sure which ones to visit? For beaches, head to Grinda. For boating, check out Sandhamn. And, for history, be sure to pay a stop at Marifred, which is home to Gripsholm Castle, a fortress from the 14th century.
Visitors can either purchase a single ticket, island hopping ticket or a monthly pass. While the islands are open year-round, winter time can prove difficult for exploring with icy conditions.
