Take a romantic train ride in Switzerland

With its flawless scenery and world-renowned chocolatiers, Switzerland has plenty to boast about when it comes to romance. What could be more idyllic than hiding away in a luxury mountaintop chalet sipping champagne to some of Europe’s most breathtaking views and gorging on delicious Swiss chocolates?

One of the country’s most popular romantic destinations is the Swiss Riveria, where the ethereal Lake Geneva and sweeping mountains provide a honeymoon-worthy backdrop. Nestle in one of villages along the lake where you can take enjoy the lakeside promenades, tuck into fondue at a mountaintop restaurant or take a picturesque train ride through the famous Lavaux vineyards, stopping off along the way for a spot of wine tasting.

At the other end of the country, visit celebrity hotspot St Moritz where you can take a hike in the spectacular Engadine Valley, hit the ski slopes with the European jet set, or take a dip in one of the area’s natural mineral baths before cuddling up in front of the fire in your VIP chalet. Alternatively, head inland to Interlaken where you can take in the sunrise by hot air balloon, ride the cogwheel railway up to the idyllic Schynige Platte, hire a rowing boat for a picnic on Lake Thun or go horse riding through the hills.

Of course you don’t have to just stay in one place – take a boat cruise down the Rhine River from Basel where you can admire the city’s historic architecture and carry on as far as Amsterdam, Cologne or Strasbourg; or opt for a cross-country train ride like the Golden Pass railway, that runs from historic Lucerne, across the Brünig pass and through famous resorts like Gstaad and Interlaken, before winding its way into Montreux.
