For travelers in search of the quintessential Swiss village that is straight out of a fairy tale, the town of Gruyères in Friborg is a good place to start. Complete with a timeless village, and crowned with an imposing castle, this village is sure to match even the most inflated expectations.
This lovely hamlet was awarded the Wakker Prize for architectural preservation in 1975, and is generally considered one of the best-preserved examples of a traditional Swiss village. It’s a great Switzerland day trip.
Kandersteg is a choice jumping-off point for exploring the nearby network of pisted hiking paths and is one of the most popular and accessible cross-country skiing areas in the country. Within the village, the Tea Room Marmotte is a safe bet for breakfast and afternoon snacks, and while nothing is cheap, most of the area hotels feature excellent fine dining establishments and bars. There are numerous gondolas and cable cars in the area extending to breathtaking vistas and points of interest, most notably the nearby Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Situated above the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, the village of Mürren is well preserved and positively enchanting. It is also famously a great place to bask in the shadow of the Eiger, one of the most imposing and iconic peaks in the Alps.
