The Taste of Tasmania Festival, called The Taste Festival these days, features Tasmania’s best food and wine for 7 days across Australia‘s summer holiday season. Located on Hobart‘s waterfront, the festival presents to nearly 500,000 visitors each season with a showcase of food, wine, arts, crafts and entertainment.
Big on the list of food features, among the over 70 food and beverage stalls, includes the famous Tasmanian seafood – everything from oysters and scallops to salmon and blue fin tuna. All food is created with fresh local produce, especially jams and desserts from local orchard grown fruit, and this also applies to international style cuisines which then have a more local flair.
Wash down the tasty food delights with a nice wine, particularly those that are best made from cold-climate grapes. Beer lovers will not be left behind with the vast array of boutique beer available throughout the celebration.
Beyond eating and drinking, the following activities are part of the The Taste Festival:
- Cooking workshops
- Food tours in Hobart
- Street art and theater
- Comedy and musical acts
With the festival taking place over the summer holidays, a shining star in the events line-up is the New Year’s Eve party, chock full of music, live entertainment and a stellar viewing of the fireworks over Sullivans Cove. Visitors gather to the harbour area, some on the water in yachts and sailboats, which are popular in this region just after the completion of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
This year’s event will take place from December 28, 2012 to January 3, 2013. All food stalls and events run from 11 am to 11 pm during these dates, except on December 31st when the operations run until 12:30 am.
