With so many skyscrapers in Tokyo, you’re not short on options to get a great view—either of the city and its skyline or from one of its many gardens and temple complexes. We’ve listed some of the best views in Tokyo:

From on high:

Tokyo Skytree

Tokyo Skytree was only opened in May 2012 and is the world’s second tallest structure (after Burj Khalifa in Dubai). It costs a bit to get in (currently 3000 yen), but the views from the 350m (1,150 ft) and 450m (1,480 ft) decks are Japan’s best.

Tokyo City View

Prior to the Tokyo Skytree, view seekers came to the Mori Tower in the Roppongi Hills district. An observation deck offers 360 degree views of the entire city, while a rooftop Sky Deck is open to visitors when the weather is good. It’s half the price of Tokyo Skytree and you can also purchase a combination ticket that includes entry into the Mori Art Museum.

Tokyo City Hall

Views come for free at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (City Hall) in Shinjuku. There are two panoramic observation decks here and they are open until 11pm on weekdays.

From down low:

The Imperial Palace

For classic views, sweeping gardens and a piece of royal history, you must visit the Imperial Palace in Central Tokyo.

Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park

Be surrounded by nature and one of Tokyo’s most important shrines in the depths of lush Yoyogi Park.

Shibuya Station—Hachiko exit

Observe the moving mass and blinking neon lights at the world’s most famous intersection.

From a distance:

See Tokyo and great views of the Rainbow Bridge from the artificial entertainment island, Odaiba, in Tokyo Bay.

Mount Takao

Seek out views, hiking and ‘old Japan’ from the slopes of Mount Takao, less than an hour by train from Shinjuku station. On clear days you can see the Tokyo skyline and Mount Fuji.
