All movie lovers will be familiar with Sofia Coppola’s movie ‘Lost in Translation.’ Set in Tokyo, the film’s main characters, played by Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, strike up a relationship when they meet in a cocktail bar in Tokyo.
That cocktail bar – the New York Bar in Tokyo’s Park Hyatt – has since become a bit of a pilgrimage site for those wishing to walk in the actors’ footsteps and partake in some of Tokyo’s best views. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, kicking back in luxurious surrounds with a great view and a sweet cocktail in hand can make you feel like a King or Queen for the day.
For the cost of a drink anyone is free to visit the New York Bar and enjoy the breathtaking views over west Shinjuku and surrounds. Many kinds of refreshments are available and the bar has a reputation as one of Tokyo’s great cocktail bars. To make the views last, a longer drink is recommended (especially if you are on a tight budget)! Popular beverages include the L.I.T. (Lost in Translation) cocktail made from sake, cherry blossom liqueur and peach schnapps. If that’s a little on the sweet side, raise your glass for a Suntory Yamazaki single malt whisky.
Try to time your visit to take advantage of the sunset so you get to enjoy both daytime and evening views. There is often live Jazz in the evenings starting at 8pm, so keep in mind that this attracts a cover charge.
The New York Bar is on the 52nd floor in the Park Hyatt at the very top of the Shinjuku Park Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Japan. Catch a bus or taxi for a short ride from Shinjuku Station or take a 15-minute walk through the district.
