If asked to name the world’s gourmet capital, many of us would immediately shout ‘Paris!’, but alas, this is no longer the case. In fact, thanks to the incredible wealth of Michelin starred restaurants in Tokyo, this city has laid claim to this title since 2010.

For those not familiar with the crème de la crème of gourmet ranking, the Michelin series of guides awards restaurants of high culinary merit with a Michelin-star (from one star to three), which automatically thrusts each nominated restaurant into the global spotlight. Only the world’s very best restaurants (and usually the most expensive!) are awarded with the coveted three stars.

A total of fifteen restaurants in Tokyo were recently awarded or retained their three-star status and all but two of these create and serve the world’s very best Japanese cuisine. The other two restaurants, Joël Robuchon and Quintessence offer exquisite French cuisine. The alpha list of three-star restaurants, which is outlined in the latest Michelin Guide: Tokyo Yokohama Shonan 2013, is as follows:

  1. Azabu Yukimura (Japanese)
  2. Esaki (Japanese)
  3. Ishikawa (Japanese)
  4. Joel Robuchon (French)
  5. Kanda (Japanese)
  6. Koan (Japanese)
  7. Koju (Japanese)
  8. Quintessence (French)
  9. Ryugin (Japanese)
  10. 7chome Kyoboshi (Japanese)
  11. Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten (Japanese)
  12. Sushi Mizutani (Japanese)
  13. Sushi Saito (Japanese)
  14. Sushi Yoshitake (Japanese)
  15. Usukifugu Yamadaya (Japanese)

If your wallet can’t quite stretch to a meal at one of the world’s best three-star restaurants, then you may wish to check out one of the other 271 restaurants in Tokyo that have been deemed worthy enough to receive a one or two star status.
