1. Visit Hachiko in Shinjuku

Find the statue of the dog Hachiko just outside the Hachiko exit at Shinjuku Station. Hachiko was so devoted to his master that he waited for him every day on this very spot and continued to do so for many years after his owner had died. From here you can walk across one of Japan’s busiest and most photographed crossings.

2. People watch in Harajuku

Watch the weird and the wonderful parade by. Outfits here take their inspiration from a number of different styles including ‘Cosplay’ (dressing as your favourite anime character) and ‘Gothic Lolita’ (dressing like a Victorian doll). Sundays are the best day to go.

3. Yoyogi Park

Follow the Harajuku fashion and freak show over to Yoyogi Park. Bands and street performers keep the atmosphere buzzing all day.

4. Check out the rainbow bridge and the city skyline from Odaiba

While the shopping and entertainment mecca Odaiba may tempt you to part with your yen, the views don’t cost a thing. The Tokyo skyline is particularly impressive at night.

5. Ueno Park

An absolute must-see in cherry blossom season, Ueno Park is lovely all year-round. The museums here all cost around 600 yen to visit but the temples and shrines within the park are free.
