The powerful Medici family, whose wealth, artistic taste and hunger for power basically brought about the Italian Renaissance, spread their influence across the whole of Tuscany. In order to keep control of this territory they established homes everywhere, over 25 of them, known as the Medici Villa, which they used for hunting, entertaining, and summer retreats. Not a bad life if you can handle the insecurities of possible assassination, peasant revolt or invasion by France.
