While it might be easy enough to focus your time spent in DC just visiting one of the areas many museums or places of historic or national interest, it’s equally easy to overlook that DC boasts some great dining for those inner gourmands. What’s more, DC a very multicultural and cosmopolitan city, so your choice of budget eats are wide and many. Let’s take a look.

Surf’s Up on NW Wisconsin Ave offers casual, cheap and delicious food with a Caribbean twist. Great cheap tacos, some rich delicacies like marinated hanger steak, warm tortillas and squeezes of lime keep people coming back to this loud but delicious (and deliciously cheap) spot.

Bamian Afghan Restaurant is another way to get international with your dining and not break the bank. Over on 5634 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church you can get kebabs, crusty lamb, or some chicken rubbed turmeric with a healthy serving of vegetables for bargain basement prices. Not to be beat.

For more standard American fare, consider heading over to Standard on 1801 14th St. NW. Standard operates in the style the owner calls North Carolina BBQ, which means expect your pork infused with apple cider vinegar, red chili flakes, black peppercorns, and some of the best hot sauce you can say “Slap Yo Mama!” to. Mostly burgers and pulled pork here, but oo’—too good and the price is just right.

Last but definitely not least on this list is Ben’s Chili Bowl. Here again you’ll be looking at hotdogs, burgers, and sub sandwiches, but they’re unbelievably good for an equally unbelievably good price. Head over to 1213 U Street NW. This is also the site of the Ben’s Chili Bowl World Chili Eating Contest. Don’t miss it to see what makes Ben’s Chili so spectacular.
