The New Year’s fireworks over the National Mall in Washington DC rival the very best celebrations around the world. From rooftops around the city to fancy dinner parties, restaurants, boats in the Potomac River, concert venues, and the Capitol lawn, the US capital city sparks with electricity and excitement as the clock ticks closer to midnight. Ring in 2014 in style at one of the many New Year’s Eve events in Washington DC.

Gala events, parties, dance clubs, entertainment, concerts, you name it—DC has it. Many of the area’s hotels have special packages and parties lined up for those wanting to do a bit of one-stop shopping for things to do this New Year’s Eve. For the third year in a row, the Washington Hilton over on 1919 Connecticut Ave NW will host the “Downtown Countdown,” a party featuring a premium open bar, hors d’oeuvres, three bands, DJs, comedians, karaoke, dancing, and the DC area’s largest balloon drop.

For a calmer, classier DC New Year’s, attend A Jazz New Year’s Eve at the Kennedy Center. Other musical performances to ring in 2014 include a burlesque-themed soiree at Howard Theater and Drive-By Truckers, a country rock band, at the ever-popular 9:30 Club. These shows require tickets in advance, so make sure to check out their websites.

If you’re tired of the tried and true New Year’s Eve things to do, however, consider a departure into the extraordinary and ring in the New Year aboard a Potomac River cruise. Dining and dancing are offered on many riverboat cruises, and the open sky, the view of the DC skyline, and the soft swish of the water beneath you create the perfect setting for festivity and romance, all in one starry night.

If the advanced purchase events aren’t your scene, consider enjoying the nightlife in DC, where locals will learn your name and toast you multiple times over at the start of the New Year. Trendy Logan Circle and hip H Street are sure to be overflowing with locals looking to ring in the New Year right.
